Fishing Industry Association of Papua New Guinea

With the responsible sourcing policy, FIA PNG has increased transparency in fishing operations and thereby enhances fisheries management as a whole. We embarked on the MSC certification of PNG’s tropical rock lobster fishery.

In 2023, Papua New Guinea’s Torres Strait Tropical Rock Lobster Fishery attained Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification, becoming the country’s first small-scale fishery to achieve the standard. FIA PNG provides support for the PNG lobster fishery in the assessment and compliance of MSC indicators to achieve recognition and better fishery management.

FIA PNG has assessed Torres Strait Rocky Lobster fishery management against 28 indicators of MSC fishery standard. In 2021, the PNG Lobster fishery was assessed against the initial Seafood MAP tool and requirements, FIA PNG was glad to join the program and expose the PNG lobster to global markets. Seafood MAP helps our staff to understand the basic requirements to comply with retailers' and market requirements. Now, we are MSC certified.
